A textile designer and hand-weaver, I live and work in Annayalla just outside Castleblayney, among the rolling hills of County Monaghan. My passion for colour and texture is evident in my hand-crafted Irish textiles, made with great care in Swallow Studios, my bright and airy purpose built workshop.
My love of colour echoes what I see around me each day; fresh hues of springtime crocuses and bluebells, vibrant highlights in our summer landscape, rich shades of autumn and shimmering, water-filled winter scenes.
Liz Christy 'Wearable Art ~ Inspired by Art' is inspired by the Impressionist paintings by my favourite artist, Claude Monet. I have a collection inspired by the character that was Monaghan poet Patrick Kavanagh. The rolling countryside where I grew up never ceases to inspire me and I am excited as the seasons unfold. The lushness of blossoming hawthorn of early June is stunning as it the reflection of bare trees in still floodwaters of winter.
It is essential that I can truly guarantee that my textile designs are genuinely hand-woven in Ireland. I hand-dye my custom spun wool. No two hanks are the same even though they are dyed at the same time using the same recipe, so in turn no two scarves are the same. The warp threads are counted out individually. Hand-weaving is an age old craft and my looms are powered by human energy alone, by the hands and the feet of the weaver. All my work has a woven selvedge for strength. Every scarf is knotted and washed by hand to finish and bring out the luxurious softness of the wool.
