These are some of Mammy’s bluebells that I have growing at the back door of Swallow Cottage. I love to see them coming on as we move away from the yellows of early spring. These are extra special because the came from my mothers garden at home and they are not the native Irish variety. Maybe she set some hyacinth bulbs under the hedge in the front garden and they naturalized, but every year I looked forward to their arrival on their sturdy stems. So to have them growing at my back door now is very precious to me.
Every year the Black Island in Castleblayney is covered in swathes of wonderful native bluebells. It is truly a joy to see and smell and reminds me of a bunch collected there and given to me by my husband, on the occasion of our first Anniversary ‘going out’ back in 1989.
So bluebells have a special place in my heart and are a perfect backdrop for photographing my scarves. Over the years we have accumulated some nice modeled shots of the scarves among the bluebells, at The Black Island and at Errybane.
