Christy Crios – Irish Handwoven Belt – Shores of Muckno BACK IN STOCK
This Irish Crios Belt Blue-Grey is handwoven at Swallow Studios. The pronunciation of ‘Crios’ is ‘Kris’. ‘Crioseanna’ is the plural. Traditionally woven from six different-coloured wool, the Crios often has a white border. The men of the Aran Islands, off the west coast of Ireland, wore the crios, bound around the waist of their tweed trousers.
Liz weaves the ‘CHRISTY CRIOS’ on a loom she inherited from a property clear out in County Sligo. The shed’s owner wanted the two-shaft floor loom ‘to go to a good home’. So, Liz happily obliged and used the loom to perfect the design and weaving of ‘the crios’. Liz’s friend and mentor, Kitty Joyce of Cleo Ltd, encouraged her to keep this craft alive. ‘CHRISTY CRIOS’ are handcrafted with beautiful Donegal tweed wool.
The shores of Muckno inspire the colours of this lovely blue crios. Liz grew up along the shores of Lough Muckno in Castleblayney and it holds a special place in her heart. This Irish Crios Belt Blue-Grey is a perfect choice as a hand-fasting braid. Of course, it will have a special significance for anyone with Castleblayney connections. It is a great choice also to wear with jeans and a chunky jumper (sweater).
