Christy Crios – Irish Handwoven Belt – Shores of Muckno
Handcrafted in Blue-Grey Donegal Tweed Wool
Woven with memory and meaning, the Shores of Muckno Crios is a tribute to the place where Liz’s love for craft and landscape first took root. Growing up along the banks of Lough Muckno in Castleblayney, Liz drew inspiration from the lapping waters, shifting skies, and quiet beauty of her hometown—a place that continues to shape her work and spirit.
This blue-grey Irish Crios Belt captures the serene tones of Muckno’s waters and soft shores. Traditionally, Crios (pronounced “Kris”, plural Crioseanna) were woven from six strands of coloured wool, often finished with a white border and worn by the men of the Aran Islands, wrapped around their tweed trousers. This modern interpretation blends tradition with personal story.
Each Christy Crios is handwoven at Swallow Studios on a vintage floor loom she rescued from a property in County Sligo. Passed along with the hope it would “go to a good home,” the loom now hums with new life. Liz has kept the ancient craft of crios weaving alive and thriving.
Crafted with rich Donegal tweed wool, this crios is a versatile piece—perfect for everyday wear with jeans and a cosy jumper, or as a meaningful handfasting braid in wedding ceremonies. For those with Castleblayney roots, it holds an even deeper connection—an heirloom of place and heritage, woven by one of your own.
