Inspired by Ireland’s flowing borderlands, the River Fane Irish Crios is a handwoven tribute to the winding river that marks the gentle meeting point between North and South. This river, which spills into the serene waters of Lough Muckno, is steeped in legend. Its banks once witnessed the arrival of Viking raiders, who were said to have sailed inland to plunder the ancient monastery at Mullandoy.
Woven at Swallow Studios in a palette of grey, mauve and green, the tones of this belt echo the watery depths of the River Fane. This design is edged in soft grey. It symbolises the river, a fluid and natural boundary in a landscape shaped by history and resilience.
Crios (pronounced “Kris”; plural Crioseanna) belts are rooted in the traditions of the Aran Islands, where they were once worn around the waists of fishermen and farmers, bound over their tweed trousers for warmth, strength, and symbolism. Woven from six coloured strands of wool, each belt carries generations of Irish craftsmanship.
Liz brings the Christy Crios to life on a floor loom she rescued during a property clearance in County Sligo. The loom was a gift from one generation to the next. Guided by her friend and mentor, Kitty Joyce of Cleo Ltd., Liz has mastered the timeless art of crios weaving, thus ensuring that these pieces remain beautiful and deeply meaningful.
Each belt is crafted using authentic Donegal tweed wool, blending natural texture, historic reverence, and elegant design. The River Fane Crios is a quiet yet powerful reminder of the real and symbolic threads that connect us across waters, borders, and time.
