Irish Belt – Christy Crios – Turquoise Red and White
The Irish Crios is a multi coloured woven woollen belt. Traditionally woven from wool of six different colours, often with a white border, it was worn by the men of the Aran Islands. This Christy Crios is woven from Donegal tweed wool in contrasting colours of turquoise deep, red and white
Crios is the Irish word for a belt. This is a multi coloured woven belt it is pronounced as ‘Kris’. Traditionally woven from wool of six different colours, the Crios often has a white border. The men of the Aran Islands, off the west coast of Ireland, wore the crios, bound around the waist of their tweed trousers. Liz weaves the ‘CHRISTY CRIOS’ on a loom which Liz inherited from a property clear out in County Sligo. The owner of the shed wanted the two shaft floor loom ‘to go to a good home’. So Liz gladly obliged and used it to perfect the design and weaving of ‘the crios’, encouraged by her friend and mentor, Kitty Joyce. ‘CHRISTY CRIOS’ are handcrafted with beautiful Donegal tweed wool.
Hand crafted to use as a belt, a guitar strap or a hand fasting braid to ‘tie the knot’.
